Two months before my Mom passed I had her signature tattooed onto me.  I remember I couldn’t wait to show her because she hadn’t seen or written her own signature in so long due to her lack of strength. She was so delighted to see her signature in proper form; seal of approval.

I’m going to make a confession about the placement of my tattoo.  My Mom’s port was surgically placed an inch below the center of her right collarbone.  It is through the port she would take in her countless chemos.  When cancer strikes in your family, there’s a new kind of fear that gets handed to you…that cancer will come for you.  A fear that can debilitating.   Cancer should know it will have to tear through my Mom again if it ever tries it on me.

This is what having her name, “shield”, tattooed onto me means to me.
